Extensive Research Description

1. Evolvable database and application development. The evolving nature of neuroscience domain knowledge impacts traditional programming and database techniques. As a consequence, many applications built over years have become obsolete. To overcome this problem, I developed a data storage and application approach that is driven by metadata. This approach has helped the SenseLab project (including a suite of databases and applications) to evolve over more than 15 years.

2. Semantically mediated data integration. Federated data integration is a difficult task, partly due to a large amount of unstructured data, lack of metadata, and missing relationships. The Query Integrator System (QIS) was designed to overcome these problems. Portions of the QIS approach were later adopted by the Neuroscience Information Framework (NIF) to develop DISCO that supports integrative Web-based information dissemination.

3. Extensible federated data discovery, registration and interoperation: The DISCO application framework was created for the Neuroscience Information Framework that was funded as part of the NIH Neuroscience Blueprint. DISCO has been used to interoperate with data from over 250 heterogeneous databases containing more than a billion records and several terabytes of dense not indexed data. All information extracted by DISCO has been made available to NIF and SciCrunch.org to build aggregated data silos for specific scientific communities. DISCO also provides brokerage Pubmed LinkOut data from those databases; to both the US and Europe Entrez Websites. DISCO controls all the data ingestion and publication process to other components of the NIF infrastructure.

4. Clinical applications: for research, improving therapeutic adherence and mobile patient engagement. Metadata driven interfaces are important to build clinical trial applications. I contributed on the development of our Clinical Trials management system (TrialDB) database design, input programming interfaces, ad-hoc queries and reporting. As consultant and CIO of Medincentive, I helped designing and implementing Web database - IVR systems to improve patient therapeutic adherence. I also play a consulting role for the Yale Emergency department. I have designed and built the TRIS application that is a Web distributed system for creating EMA protocols in a centralized server to control any worldwide distributed client SMS server to interact with local patients via SMS carrier. The system was initially tested in New Zealand.
